“There it was, the mountain. Just waiting for me to go up and explore it. I couldn’t resist! It was pulling me towards it!” I say. You look at me and raise one of your eyebrows.
“Don’t look at me like that!” I shout. You open your mouth and start to say something.
“I know what your thinking! I’m not delusional!”
“Look. Normal people don’t get, err, seduced by mountains.”
“You don’t get it do you? Urgh. I better tell you the whole story!”
It was a September evening. My parents were fighting again. I told them that I had had enough of their constant fighting and I asked them why they didn’t just get a divorce. My mum looked at me and froze. As if I paralyzed her. I couldn’t take it anymore so I ran out of the house. I know it was a stupid thing to do. It was night time but I had had enough! So I ran and ran until I couldn’t run anymore. I ended up right outside a hay shed so I went in and hid in the hay and slept. I woke up early in the morning surprised that everything was quiet then I remembered everything that happened. I quickly snuck out of the shed back onto the open road. I was dawdling on the road and I saw this sign, pointing towards a mountain. So I followed the sign and ended up at the foot of the mountain. I looked at it and tried to turn away, but I couldn’t. I tried to move my feet but I couldn’t. I was stuck, trapped there. I closed my eyes and tried to take a step backwards but I couldn’t. Instead I took a step forwards, then several more steps. I opened my eyes and I tried to scream. I didn’t want to go up but something was pulling me up towards it.
“Whoa. Wait a moment.” You say.
“What?” I reply
“This is like some adventure story. I don’t have enough time to worry about you and your little misadventures.”
“You don’t get it do you?”
“What is there to get? One day you ran away from home and climbed a mountain. Big deal!”
“I knew I shouldn’t have come to a therapist.”
“Do you know why your here?” You ask me with a desperate tone in you voice.
“Yes! Because everyone thinks I’m crazy, they think that I’m delusional!”
“They don’t think that, they know that! Listen to me. Your wife is scared of you! She’s had enough of you being this way! She wants you to be normal like you once were!”
“There’s something wrong with this mountain! You don’t get it! The mountain has some mystical powers. Some mystical evil powers!”
“No! There’s no such thing as magic! You have to listen to me. I’m trying to get your life back on track!”
“You still don’t get it! I am dedicating my life to solving this problem!”
“You know what? Just forget it. I’ve had enough of trying to help you! Just go, help yourself with your mystical mountain. Leave! Don’t come back until your prepared to solve your problem!”
“I’m here for my wife. Listen to me. This mountain. It has some mystical powers. Something that draws the unexpected, the unwilling towards it. The mountain is different to any other mountain.”
“Oh yes. Mountains now have magical powers. It’s completely normal!” You shout in my face.
“Your still not listening to me! It’s not completely normal to have a mountain with mystical powers.”
“Listen tome you fool! There is no such thing as a mountain with mystical powers!”
“That’s what everyone would think! I’m telling the truth!”
“This mountain of yours, where is it?”
“I don’t know! The next time I went there to see it again it was gone.”
“Mountains don’t just disappear!”
“I know they don’t! Look. This mountain has strange creatures living on it. It’s full of weird and mystical things!”
“What? Snakes?” You say sarcastically.
“No. Monsters.”
“Right. Get out of my office! Now! And don’t come back until you’re ready to understand the difference between what’s real and what’s not!”
